What is ‘Civil Litigation’?
When people have a dispute which they can’t resolve for themselves, lawyers call it ‘civil litigation’.
What kind of disputes are we talking about?
It could be anything; the builder who botches the job; the neighbour who plays loud music at midnight; the ‘old friend’ who borrowed money and won’t pay you back. Equally it could be a holiday company or a large organisation like a bank, the Inland Revenue or the Local Authority.
Will I have to go to court?
Going to court is the last resort. Problems can be resolved in a variety of ways like for instance, writing letters, holding ‘without prejudice’ meetings, small claims arbitration and even formal mediation.
How much will it cost to see if you can do anything about this?
Our experts will usually be able to tell you if you have a legitimate grievance and recommend a remedy - for nothing. As every case is different, we will advise you as to the best and most effective solution - then it’s up to you. If you decide to proceed, Legal Services funding (formerly Legal Aid) may be available. If not, there are several ways of funding a case and we’ll explain them all. The important thing is that you’ll always be in control of the cost.
